OCHS at Unitarian Center Oct 21, 2004 12:00 AM A A On Sunday, St. Clair Productions will present the Phil — Ochs Songnight, hosted by his sister Sonny Ochs, at the Unitarian Center, — Fourth and C Streets, Ashland. — Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a silent auction benefiting — Peace House. Music begins at 8 p.m. — Featured performers for this Phil Ochs Songnight include: — SONiA of disappear fear, Greg Greenway, Magpie, Kim and Reggie Harris, — Pat Humphries and Sandy O, David Roth, Tom Prasada-Rao, and John Flynn. — Each act will sing one of Ochs? songs and one of its own. — Phil Ochs wrote over 100 songs during the 60s and early — 70s. Many were recorded by other artists including John Denver, Gordon — Lightfoot, Ronnie Gilbert, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and Pete Seeger. — Most of Ochs? songs were very political, some humorous — and some very serious. Among his best known songs are: "Changes," "There — But For Fortune," "I Ain't Marching Anymore," "Small Circle of Friends," — and "When I'm Gone." — Born in El Paso, TX, in 1940, Ochs moved to Greenwich — Village in New York City in the early 60s. He started singing at open — mics and passing the hat. — By 1964 he was well enough established to release his — first album, "All the News That's Fit To Sing". His second album, "I Ain't — Marching Anymore", was released in 1965, and by 1966 he was able to sell — out Carnegie Hall for a solo concert. — In 1967, Ochs signed with A&M Records. His first release — on the label was "Pleasures of the Harbor" on which he used heavily orchestrated — arrangements for the first time. — Ochs committed suicide on April 9, 1976 at the age of — 35. In 1983, his sister Sonny Ochs began holding Phil Ochs Songnights — at Greenwich Village coffeehouses with a variety of performers taking — part. — Tickets to the Ashland Songnight are $17 in advance, $20 — at the door and $10 for children 5-17. — Tickets are available at the Music Coop in the A Street — Market Place, on line at www.stclairevents.com or by calling 535-3562.
