Hornets rain on Panthers' parade with opening win KLAMATH FALLS -- It wasn't the prettiest day for softball, but Tuesday's outcome couldn't have been more attractive for Henley softball coach Steve Rooklidge. The Hornets withstood unpleasant temperatures to launch the season on a winning note with an 8-3 non-conference win over South Medford. Emily Mills smacked a two-run home run as the Hornets doubled their 4-1 lead in the sixth inning. The Panthers answered with two runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough. "It was freezing," Rooklidge said of the chilly conditions. "I'm not sure either team played that well but it was the first game. It's nice to get things started with a win, especially over a school like South." Mills also banged a triple to go along with her round-tripper and Erika Clemonts added two hits for Henley. Senior first baseman Lindsay Hale cracked two of the Panthers three hits. Krystal Young picked up the win with four strikeouts in five innings of work. ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, SOUTH UMPQUA 1 -- At Cave Junction, Stephanie Moore had two singles and an RBI in helping the Cougars to a victory in their season-opener. Freshman Sara Shinerock and junior Rachel Pierce (1-0) combined on a two-hitter, with Shinerock posting six strikeouts and Pierce adding four. Autumn Bell got things going for Illinois Valley with a leadoff walk in the first inning. Pierce followed with a single and Emily Hoskins was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After an RBI single by Moore, Julie Shump earned a walk to drive in the second run. Hoskins paved the way for the Cougars' third run in the fifth, driving a shot over the center fielder's head for a triple. Hoskins walked home when the relay to nab her at third went out of play.
