Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 16, 2005 Nativity owner gives away front-yard cr�che to two men in black In keeping with the spirit of giving during the Christmas season, Relfe Patterson handed over the rest of his nativity scene Thursday to a pair of pierced, black-clad young men a week after the set’s baby Jesus was stolen from his yard. The men did not identify themselves before they loaded the nativity scene into their black Honda hatchback, Patterson said. They took only the hollow, internally illuminated plastic figures, telling him they’d return for the makeshift wooden structure that housed the lawn ornaments later in the day. But by late evening they had yet to show, Patterson said. "They said that they had come across a baby Jesus and needed the rest of it," Patterson said. Patterson had placed a sign above the nativity scene in his front yard in the 300 block of Cerritos Avenue after the theft, announcing that anyone who wanted the rest of the scene could come by to claim it for free. He said Wednesday he wouldn’t prosecute the perpetrators. Instead, he would give them the remaining figures and a Bible. Jesus would have wanted it that way, Patterson said. He is not sure if the pair who claimed the lighted decorations Thursday were the actual thieves. "They weren’t very talkative, but they did say ‘thank you’," Patterson said. "I would have liked to have talked to them a little more." Advertisement Patterson described the men, who showed up at his door at around noon, as wearing mostly black. Both had pierced ears, he said. "They accepted the Bible," Patterson said. Patterson said that he intended to keep the nativity scene unlit unless the stolen baby Jesus figure was returned. He nearly had a change of heart Thursday morning after received a phone call from a Grants Pass woman who encouraged him to light the scene regardless. That plan was short-lived, as the men arrived a few hours later and carted the nativity scene away.
