COLLEGE FOOTBALL Mahalak serving his time with Ducks Comment By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 15, 2015 at 5:26 PM By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 15, 2015 at 5:26 PM » Social News EUGENE — Morgan Mahalak was pretty good at mimicking other Pac-12 quarterbacks last season. But while serving as a scout team quarterback and adjusting to life as a college freshman, Mahalak didn’t put in enough extra work to prepare himself to be Oregon’s next starting quarterback. That all began to change when Marcus Mariota declared for the NFL draft shortly after the national championship. Mahalak, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound redshirt freshman, says he’s up to speed on the playbook and embracing the five-man competition at quarterback this spring. “Now I feel pretty confident in the film room learning each day as much as I can and translating it onto the field as best as I can,” Mahalak said. “The biggest thing for me has been in the film room, getting the offense down so I can just play and be free.” Mahalak is trying to separate himself from the three other young candidates and close the gap on junior Jeff Lockie this spring before Eastern Washington graduate transfer Vernon Adams joins the fray this summer. Lockie has a firm grasp of the offense after backing Mariota up the past two seasons, completing 29-of-41 passes for 264 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a reserve role. Adams, who will only have one year of eligibility remaining at Oregon, was a dual-threat superstar at the FCS level. In two games against Pac-12 teams — a 49-46 victory over Oregon State in 2013 and a 59-52 loss to Washington in 2014 — Adams passed for a combined 886 yards with 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. Mahalak has a lot of work to do to be the surprise starter on Sept. 5. “He’s competing now. He’s giving himself a chance,” coach Mark Helfrich said of Mahalak. “I think he said it publicly, that he probably didn’t put his best foot forward in the fall. But he’s competing hard right now, which is all you can ask for at this point.” Mahalak is used to being patient. He didn’t start at quarterback at Marin (Calif.) Catholic High until his senior season after his predecessor, Jared Goff, graduated and took over the controls of Sonny Dykes’ spread offense at California. After playing some wide receiver for Goff as a junior, Mahalak threw for 2,795 yards with 38 touchdowns and four interceptions as the starter in 2013. Following in the Heisman Trophy winner’s shoes at Oregon is more difficult. “Morgan is still learning a lot. There is a steep learning curve being in this offense,” offensive graduate assistant and former Duck quarterback Nate Costa said. “For him, it’s a pace-of-play deal. This is a fast game. He was on scout team a lot last year and he didn’t get to get a real feel for it. Now here in spring he’s getting more of an experience on that and it’s something he’s still adjusting to. “He’s doing some good things, but there’s also a lot of stuff he still needs to improve on. He knows that.” Mahalak said he learned a lot by watching Mariota during Oregon’s historic 2014 season, and playing on the scout team allowed him to compete against elite players like the NFL-bound Arik Armstead and Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. “That was great for me and my development,” Mahalak said. “Now it’s kind of time to take a step up and go on to better and bigger things. I’m just trying to do the best I can to lead this team.” By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Ryan Thorburn Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 15, 2015 at 5:26 PM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football 2015 Fantasy Outlook for Chargers' Stars Apr. 17, 2015 at 6:15 am Fantasy Outlook for Dolphins Stars Apr. 14, 2015 at 6:37 am Biggest Fantasy Winners, Losers in Free Agency Apr. 8, 2015 at 2:45 am Fantasy Football Outlook for Bears Stars Apr. 7, 2015 at 1:09 am RBs Ready to Break Out on New Teams Apr. 2, 2015 at 10:21 am Who Will Be QB1s with New Teams in 2015?
