Guest faces attempted murder in east Medford hot tub shooting Charles Bradford Curtis Thursday May 4, 2017 at 9:25 AM May 4, 2017 at 6:20 PM Nick Morgan Mail Tribune @mtcrimebeatRyan Pfeil Mail Tribune @RyanPfeil A New Mexico man pleaded not guilty Thursday to attempted murder and assault charges in the shooting of his east Medford host, allegedly stemming from a fight that ensued after the victim caught his guest and his girlfriend naked in the hot tub. Charles Bradford Curtis, 53, of Albuquerque, wore a jail-issued anti-suicide garment during a video hearing from the Jackson County Jail Thursday afternoon. A call to jail operations manager Lt. Josh Aldrich about why Curtis was wearing the garment was not immediately returned. Circuit Judge Tim Barnack ordered him to remain held without bail Thursday pending felony charges of attempted murder, unlawful use of a weapon and first- and second-degree assault in the shooting of 58-year-old Daniel Joseph Daly. Daly remains in the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to Deputy District Attorney Alyssa Claseman. Curtis was an old friend of Daly's girlfriend of more than 30 years, Claseman said. The girlfriend's name was not released. Alcohol was a factor in the dispute and shooting in the 4600 block of Eagle Trace Lane Wednesday evening, according to Claseman. The dispute began about 9 p.m. Wednesday, when Daly arrived home to find his girlfriend and Curtis unclothed in the spa. A physical fight began between Daly and Curtis, and Daly ordered Curtis to leave, Medford police said. Daly then argued with his girlfriend inside the house for several minutes, police said. Curtis armed himself with a .38 Special handgun, though he was still unclothed when Daly went back outside to confront his guest, Claseman said.  "When he came outside, the defendant shot him," Claseman said, adding that the bullet went through Daly's chest. Medford police described the injury as "serious but not believed to be life-threatening." Daly was rushed to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center Wednesday night, and he remained in the hospital Thursday afternoon, according to Claseman. She told the court that Daly had not yet had surgery from the injury.
