The Crusaders trailed Reedsport by one stroke after the opening round Thursday, but strong second-day performances by Mike Rust, James Yanu and Nelson Keating carried St. Mary’s to the title. St. Mary’s tallied a low score of 677 and will advance to the state championships May 17-18 at Stone Creek Golf Course in Oregon City. Reedsport (678) is the second team from the district that will advance to state. Senior Mike Rust had the best second-day round for the Crusaders with a 8-over par 80. Rust also had the low team two-day total (165). Rust tied for third overall. Advertisement Derek Robinson of Mohawk gained medalist honors in the tournament with a 150. Nic McNair (156) of Gold Beach and Eric Leland (165) of Bandon will join Robinson at state as individuals. Cascade Christian finished fifth in the tournament. Track CHIEFTAIN TWILIGHT — At Rogue River, Jon Riley of Illinois Valley and Dani Holmes of Rogue River posted the top individual performances at the nine-school meet. Hidden Valley and Phoenix traded top spots in the boys and girls team scoring. The Mustang boys won with 133½ points to 125 for the Pirates. In girls, Phoenix scored 112½ , while Hidden Valley was second with 105½ . Riley came up with a javelin throw of 187-0, which moves him past South Medford’s Alan Phillips for the best mark in Southern Oregon. Holmes’ shot put of 39-3 gives her the top girls mark in Southern Oregon. Nick Waroff of Rogue River posted an individual double with victories in the 100 (11.06) and 200 (23.2). Kim Hamilton of Illinois Valley had a big day with wins in the javelin (122-1½ ) and long jump (15-8¼ ) and a second in the 100. Phoenix received a pair of victories from Kat Cox in the high jump (4-10) and 100 hurdles (16.73), while Rogue River’s Allegra Fety doubled in the 800 and 1,500.
