Night terrors are the theme — eek! remember those? — and the sets, characters and special effects are crafted by a creative team of lighting, sound and scenic designers who not only know stagecraft but how to maximize dread and trepidation. Look for pneumatic and animatronic scare props — zombie women, leaping clowns, a devilish cherub and a giant, spitting leech — in a professional-grade scare fest that is a cut above. Horror fans can pass through this twisting labyrinth of terror from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Oct. 16-18, Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 22-25, and Wednesday through Sunday, Oct. 28 through Nov. 1, inside Randall's 10,000 square-foot warehouse, 10 E. Third St., Medford. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at randalltheatre.com , at Magic Man Fun Shops, 880 Biddle Road, Medford, and 1448 Williams Highway, in Grants Pass, by calling 541-632-3258, or at the door. Discounted tickets are available at the Magic Man stores. Now in its sixth year, Randall Theatre's Nightmare Chamber has become a fixture on the local Halloween front. It is attention to detail that sets this haunted house apart from others in the area, according to Randall Artistic Director Robin Downward. “We're a theater company," Downward says. "This is what we do throughout the year. The haunt is an opportunity for us to really go big and create a world that is truly terrifying, but also fun and safe." As in years past, the 2015 haunt will feature some new special effects. “We love adding new pieces to our haunted house,” Downward says. “We add something new every year just to keep things fresh. It keeps our guests on their toes if there is something unexpected around the corner.” Look for a terrifying Hall of Clowns, Downward says. "For all of those people who are afraid of clowns, we've stuffed as many horrible, scary clowns as we could find into one area. Most of them are animatronic and have their own movements and make their own sounds. It's an evil clown overload." Also new this year are computerized controllers that lend realism to moving props. There are more than 30 moving and jumping props in The Nightmare Chamber that come from everywhere — the floor, walls, even the ceiling. Returning to The Nightmare Chamber's creative team this year are Universal Studios FX artists Rachel and Kevin Tolson, along with three other makeup artists. Rachel Tolson specializes in makeup effects that are required to bring life to creatures — and their victims. Kevin Tolson created custom masks that will be used at the event. Rachel and Kevin Tolson will offer a special-effects makeup and mask-making workshop that will be open to anyone who wants to put a little Hollywood flair into a Halloween look. The workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in The Nightmare Chamber. The cost is $35 and includes a "lights on" walk through the set.
