The lone male wearing a hooded sweatshirt stormed into the Big 4 Market at the intersection of Vilas and Table Rock roads at 11:45 p.m., then quickly ran behind the deli counter and confronted a female clerk, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The robber pointed a gun at her head and "he yelled ‘Get the money now. Move. Move. Move,’ " sheriff’s Detective Dan Hobbs said Monday. "As she started moving, he put the gun to her head and said he’d kill her if she didn’t give him the money," Hobbs said. Advertisement The clerk ran behind the counter toward the register and the gunman went in front of the counter, facing her, Hobbs said. The clerk handed the robber an undisclosed amount of cash, which he stuffed into his sweatshirt pocket before fleeing the store on foot, Hobbs said. The man was last seen running west on Vilas Road toward Hamrick Road, he said. It was unclear whether the handgun was a pistol or a revolver, Hobbs said. Hobbs said the robbery was unusual because of the gunman’s aggressiveness and the lack of a mask in the well-lighted store. A second clerk, a male, was in the rear of the market at the time of the robbery, Hobbs said. Sheriff’s deputies descended on the area and several people were detained during the initial investigation, Hobbs said. One man was arrested on unrelated charges of illegal possession of a handgun, but he was not identified by the clerk as the robber, Hobbs said. Hobbs declined to discuss whether any portion of the robbery was caught on surveillance tape. The robbery occurred the day after a Purple Parrot in Medford was robbed at gunpoint. However, the cases were considered unrelated Monday because the gunman’s descriptions in the two robberies were different, Hobbs said. The Big Four Market robber was described as a male in his late 20s with clear, olive complexion and round brown eyes. He was described as standing 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build and was last seen wearing a long-sleeve gray sweatshirt with a hood. Hobbs said anyone with information about the case should call the sheriff’s department at 774-6800.
