Roseburg tops Ashland in finale ASHLAND Knowing it was probably their final game of the season, the Roseburg Indians laid it on the line Tuesday against Ashland in the Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball regular season finale. The Indians big front line of Shannon Burmeister, Lindsey Heard and Sarah Gilding combined for 61 points as Roseburg defeated host Ashland, 71-66. The Grizzlies (15-9, 8-6 SOC) had the conference third-place spot locked up going into the game, while Roseburg (12-12, 7-7 SOC) could not move into the leagues final state playoff berth unless Klamath Union was upset by last-place Eagle Point. Burmeister scored 30 points to pace Roseburgs 65 percent shooting performance (31-of-48) from the field. "Part of that is we gave up too many easy baskets in the first half," Ashland coach Heather Roberts said. "We knew theyd be fired up because it was like their tournament. Also, they handled our press a lot better than the first time." Ashland senior post Jackie Woods played a strong game on both ends of the court with 26 points, seven rebounds and six steals. The Grizzlies trailed just 40-38 at halftime, but Roseburg went on an 18-8 third-quarter run. "We came out flat in the third and they had a lot of momentum," said Roberts. Ashland cut the margin to one point with about four minutes remaining in the contest, but never got any closer. "Our press started to kick in during the fourth quarter," said Roberts. "We got them playing the game we wanted, but a little too late. "It wasnt like we played bad," concluded Roberts. "They just played well."
