Crater girls roll to victory CENTRAL POINT - The game plan couldn't have worked more perfectly for the Crater girls basketball team Friday night against Mountain View. With a marquee matchup pending this afternoon, the second-ranked Comets wanted to get off to a fast start, give their starters some rest and let the reserves take over. Mission accomplished. Crater rolled to a 28-8 lead in the second quarter behind a monster performance by Amy Denson and coasted to a 93-49 non-conference victory. It sets up a showdown at 2:45 p.m. today here against ninth-ranked and undefeated Redmond. The Intermountain Conference power upped its record to 6-0 with an 83-68 triumph over Ashland Friday. "I think it was important for us to come out and really click on offense," said Crater coach David Heard, "and that's what happened in the first quarter." In their best offensive game of the year, the Comets scored 31 of their 52 first-half points in the second quarter and led by 28 at intermission. Denson, the 6-foot-1 senior post, scored 21 points and gathered eight rebounds - all in the first half. She grabbed five offensive rebounds for putbacks and was 10 of 12 from the field, including a 3-pointer. No one on the Crater roster played more than 15 minutes, said Heard, whose team improved to 7-0. Three other Comets reached double figures in points. Kelsey Anhorn scored 12, Whitney Black 11 and Addie Wiersma 10. Sarah Pool had eight points, nine assists and seven steals, and Sarah Yager and Black combined for another seven steals. Mountain View turned the ball over 39 times, 26 of which were Comet steals. The Cougars, who have beaten both North and South Medford, dropped to 5-2. Crater made 34 of 75 field goals, and six players drained nine 3-pointers. A similar performance today would bode well for the Comets. "They get up and down the floor," Heard said of the Panthers of Redmond. "They play the same style that we do. They play a lot of people and they run and run and run. "I expect it to be a war tomorrow, and in an afternoon game, it's a different setting. I hope the kids are up for it."
