Chico drops Mustangs in 11 The Medford Mustangs pitched well enough to win Sunday in a scheduled non-league American Legion doubleheader with the Chico Nuts, but couldn't overcome some sloppy defensive play. The Mustangs dropped Game 1 9-8 in 11 innings at Miles Field and Game 2 was canceled due to the length of the opener. Evan MacArthur picked up the loss despite giving up only one earned run in his four innings of work. The Mustangs pounded out 12 hits but committed five crucial errors in the loss. Medford sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs in the first inning. Rob Folsom led things off with a walk and went to third on a double by catcher Matt Smith. Shawn Backstrom delivered with an RBI single and Tony Conklin followed with a double to score another run. An RBI groundout, a bases loaded walk and a run-scoring wild pitch capped the productive inning for the Mustangs. The Nuts rallied to tie things up in the sixth and the two squad went scoreless until the 11th. Chico pushed across two runs to grab the lead and Medford answered with one of their own in the bottom of the 11th. But, with runners on first and third and one out, Evan MacLane fanned Jon Engle and Folsom to end the rally. Backstrom led the Mustangs with three hits in five plate appearances. Evan MacLane and Matt Plummer led Chico with three hits apiece. Medford, which fell to 4-3 on the season, opens league play on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. doubleheader at the Klamath Falls Falcons. The Falcons and the Mustangs have played twice so far this season with Medford taking a 9-6 victory and Klamath Falls grabbing 24-10 win in the other contest.
