PREP SOCCER STATE PLAYOFFS North rally not enough, loses to CV CORVALLIS -- North Medford's run in the Class 4A girls state soccer playoffs came to an abrupt end Tuesday. The Black Tornado rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit to tie the score at 2-all, but eventually lost 3-2 to Valley League champion Crescent Valley. Chelsea Dengler's header off a crossing pass from Katie Welsh provided the winning goal for the Raiders in the 72nd minute. After the teams played through a scoreless first half, four goals were scored in a seven-minute span in the second period. Crescent Valley (14-1-1) opened the scoring on Elizabeth Johnson's goal at the 59th minute. Jaime Ableman's unassisted goal five minutes later gave the Raiders a 2-0 cushion. But North answered in a hurry. Senior forward Heather Johnson cut the Raiders' lead in half in the 65th minute on an assist from Julia Clark. Then junior midfielder Tennille Bennett knotted the score one minute later off an assist from Johnson. North Medford tied for the Southern Oregon Conference championship with South Medford, but the Black Tornado was the No. 2 seed in the state playoffs because of its regular-season shootout loss to South. Crescent Valley advances to the quarterfinals, where it meets Central Catholic, a 2-0 winner over Tualatin. Class 3A/2A/1A Girls NORTH VALLEY 3, DOUGLAS 0 -- At Winston, North Valley received goals from senior Marissa Bauer, junior Jessica Friedman and sophomore Malloree Enoch to advance into the state quarterfinals. The Knights will play host to Wilsonville, a 4-1 winner over Woodburn, on Saturday. Bauer and Friedman tallied first-half goals, while Enoch completed the scoring at the 68th minute. North Valley registered a 17-15 edge in shots on goal. HENLEY 3, ONTARIO 1 -- At Ontario, Henley, the District 6 No. 3 seed, knocked off the District 7 champion to advance into Saturday's state quarterfinals. The Hornets will play host to District 5 champion Marist, which defeated Seaside 5-0 in the second round. Class 3A/2A/1A Boys ST. MARY'S 5, CITY CHRISTIAN 1 -- At Portland, senior Gabe Schonerd and junior Brian Staver accounted for four goals and five assists as St. Mary's advanced to the state quarterfinals. The Crusaders (12-2) will play host to Catlin Gabel, a 9-2 winner over Valley Catholic, on Saturday. After City Christian took a 1-0 lead on a breakaway goal on a wet, slippery field at the seventh minute, Staver scored three minutes later off an assist from Schonerd. St. Mary's went into intermission with a 2-1 lead after Zack Rote scored at the 17th minute off Schonerd's second assist. Schonerd scored the Crusaders first two goals of the second half with Staver providing the assist on both. Then the two reversed roles on the final goal. "The guys spread the field and did some nice combinations in the middle," said St. Mary's coach Eric Wolff. "We controlled the tempo and the passing. We put the pressure on them for 80 or 90 percent of the time." Peter Staver and Brandon Frankel did a job of protecting the Crusader's defensive zone.
