But it was her partner who came through in the clutch Friday in the Oregon Golf Association Women’s Best Ball Championship at Stone Ridge Golf Club. Sharon Hadley recovered from a poor tee shot on the 18th hole with a birdie putt as she and Budke defended the title they won a year ago. "She made a great birdie on 18 to close them out," said Budke. Eugene’s Budke and Springfield’s Hadley shot a 69 on Friday, combining with a first-day 70 for a 5-under-par 139 and a two-shot win over Nettie Morrison and Nancy Breitenstein. Advertisement Morrison and Breitenstein were the first-day leaders but struggled to a 73 and a 141 total. Eloise Carson and Emily Harnden were third at 143, and Carmen Akins of Eagle Point and Jan Young were fourth at 144. The format calls for each player to play her own ball, and the best score of the two is used on each hole. Budke, the 1972 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion and a three-time All-American at Oregon State, was knocking her approach shots close most of the day but couldn’t get most of her birdie putts to fall. However, her birdie on the 11th hole vaulted the duo into contention. She and Hadley were two strokes behind before Budke made 3 to Morrison and Breitenstein’s 5. It was a nice change from the way Budke, who won eight OGA women’s championships in the 1970s and early ‘80s, had been going. "Mary played great today," said Hadley. "She hit the ball close all day. If she could have made all her putts, we would have shot 65." Budke and Hadley didn’t know what the rest of the field was doing, but they played with the first-round leaders. "That was nice," said Budke. "We knew how we were doing." Budke and Hadley took a one-shot lead to the 18th, but Hadley hit her tee shot left of the cart path and perilously close to the hazard. She had to back into blackberry bushes and dig the ball out with a wedge. "I backed in there and was getting stuck with stickers in the backs of my legs," she said. "The ball was buried quite deep, so I took a sand wedge and tried to get it as far down the fairway as I could. I was right at 100 yards, my perfect pitching wedge." While Budke was in the process of making bogey, Hadley, a 1980 North Eugene graduate who played collegiately at New Mexico, hit her approach 15 feet left of the middle pin placement, then made the putt. She wasn’t nervous. "Actually, no," said Hadley. "It was more dogged determination. It was fun, very fun." Breitenstein was looking at a 6-footer for birdie herself that could have tied it had Hadley missed. But Breitenstein two-putted for par. Akins, whose husband, Pat, is the head pro at the course, enjoyed being on her home layout. She and Young won the tournament in 2000 and 2001. "It was kind of fun this year not having to drive 200 miles to go somewhere else to play," she said. "I was hoping for more, but that’s the way golf is. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t." Akins and Young did share the low-net title with two other teams, including Pamela Faurote of Rogue River and Joan Peek of Medford. They, along with Morrison and Breitenstein, came in with net 129s.
