PREP TRACK Russell soars state-best 11-1 in pole vault Rain and wind can be among a pole vaulter's biggest enemies, but South Medford's Kristin Russell wasn't affected by either adverse weather condition at Newland Track on Tuesday. Russell broke her own school record for the fourth time in 12 days when she cleared 11-feet, 1-inch in a dual meet against Crater. The South girls handily defeated the Comets 87-47. Crater turned the tables in the boys competition with a 78-67 win. "The rain just didn't seem to bother her," South Medford coach Bill Rowan said. "The runway was soaked and her pole was dripping wet, but Kristin puts all that aside and just gets after it." The mark is also No. 1 in the state. Russell had been tied with Dana Huseby of Hood River and Rhiannon Armson of Stayton at 11-feet even. Tuesday's other notable mark belonged to South Medford's Janette Martin, who sped to a 57.7 clocking in the 400 despite competing against just one other runner -- teammate Whitney Grant. Grant was timed in 66.6. "It isn't easy to run fast in rainy conditions and especially when you're out there pretty much alone," Rowan said. "Janette is just scratching the surface of what she can do." The South girls won 12 of the 16 events contested. Kylie Healy had a solid double, winning the shot put (37-3) and discus (110-4). Freshman Kelly Sullivan also had a good day as she ran a lifetime best of 11:56.1 to take the 3,000. On the boys side, Joel Wangle won the long jump (19-5) and triple jump (38-11) and Brad Ralph took the shot put (48-0) and discus (146-7) to pace the Comets to victory. South Medford's Jon Micah Sumrall ran a lifetime best of 11.3 to win the 100 and also triumphed in the 110 hurdles in 15.9. Another Panther highlight came in the 1,500 where Shaun Olson set a freshman record of 4:22.4. In the six-school Glendale Invitational, Cascade Christian and St. Mary's had strong showings. In boys, Cascade finished second (94) and St. Mary's placed third (91). Gold Beach won the team title with 143 points. Trevor Coolidge was a double winner for St. Mary's win victories in the 1,500 (4:21.7) and 3,000 (9:44.5), while Jason Winningham posted wins for the Challengers in the pole vault (9-9) and 800 (2:10.2). Cascade's Jordan Ferrell won the javelin (128-3) and finished second in the high jump (5-10). St. Mary's Jordan Frimkess won the 200 (24.4) and placed second in the javelin (112-2). On the girls side, host Glendale easily captured the team event with 166 points, while the Crusaders were runner-ups at 104. Cascade Christian finished fourth with 79 points. St. Mary's picked up five individual victories led by Kristen Zielony, who bettered her own school record in the triple jump (30-9) and doubled in the long jump (14-7). Other St. Mary's winners were Lauren Frank in the 100 (14.1), Trina Stout in the 100 hurdles (19.5) and Martina Patella in the 3,000 (11:57.9). Cascade Christian picked up its lone victory from Kelly Clarke in the discus (86-3). The Challengers' Crystal Tait finished second in the long jump (14-2) and 400 (1:07.8). Crater at S.
