Variations on dance themes All That Jazz dancers are bound for Europe A group of Southern Oregon teens will travel to several venues in Austria in June as one of only four youth companies from the United States to perform in the Tanzsommer Dance Festival. The 14- to 19-year-olds in the performance ensemble of All That Jazz Dance Studio performed on a 12-day tour with the Dance Festival in 2003, and they have been asked back. Audiences in the Rogue Valley won't have to go to Europe to see the group's performance, however. All That Jazz Productions will present a preview performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center, 830 N.E. Ninth St., Grants Pass. The show is titled "Dance Variations" and will feature an evening of hip hop, jazz, dance comedy, ballet, salsa, street tap, lyrical dance and other dance styles. Pieces by professional New York and Los Angeles choreographers who taught the dancers in private classes will be included. Guest artists will include dancers from Medford's Ballet Rogue and the K. Howard Dance ensemble from Roseburg. All That Jazz is a professionally staffed and licensed, award-winning, internationally known dance and performance arts studio founded in 1989 by Karen Daggett and Wes Veldink. Advanced Production is the studio's teen performance company. Under the direction of Daggett, the dancers have competed and performed at various venues across Oregon, California, Washington and Florida; have won numerous awards for dance excellence annually since 1989; are nationally ranked; and have appeared in Dance Spirit and Dance Teacher magazines. In 2002, competing against 95 other entries from the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the company earned the highest honor at L.A. Danceforce's International Finals and the title "Performers of the Year" for mastery of technique, performance quality, style and choreographic excellence. Advertisement In July of 2004, Advanced Production captured a spot in the televised Co-Dance Championship filmed at MGM Studios in Disney World, earning Platinum for the piece, "Yacht Club" (choreographer, Gregg Russell, co-developer of dance studio magazine, Studio Beat). Other choreographers whose work will be performed in "Dance Variations" include: Lorena Aranda, who directs and choreographs for the professional dance company Empyrean Movement; Kristen De Bellis, award-winning dancer/choreographer; Kyle Sorensen, dance director at Arthur Murray Ballroom Dance Studios in Portland; Sabina Hillman, director of All That Jazz's Intermediate Production ensemble; Diane Gaumond-Hyrst, artistic director of Ballet Rogue; and Tyce Dioro, Chris Dupre and Summer Hensley. Tickets for "Dance Variations" are $12 general admission and $8 for seniors, students and children. Tickets are available at All That Jazz Dance Studio or at the door.
