The Black Tornado, on the other hand, is in a fight for its playoff life. Janelle Cristofaro tossed a five-hitter and Susan Winningham went 3-for-4 to lead the Comets (19-3, 10-2 SOC) to their 11th straight win. North Medford (12-9, 5-6 SOC) is one half game out of the fourth and final state-playoff berth with three games to be played. The contest was a makeup from a rain-out on Saturday. Advertisement Kirstin Davidson, who finished 3-for-3, gave Crater a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the first inning. The Tornado trimmed its deficit to 2-1 in the third when Mallorie Hoover drove in Deni Rowley from second base. But the Comets added an insurance run in the seventh and North Medford couldn’t find an answer. "We had a couple of opportunities," said North coach Missy Doerr. "We only had three innings where it was three-up- and-three-down." The Tornado travels to play Klamath Union today in a single game, then hosts a regular-season ending doubleheader with Roseburg on Saturday. North must win two of its final three games to clinch a playoff berth. Crater is one game behind the Indians with two games to go. Grants Pass (12-9, 6-6 SOC) committed six errors in the nightcap that led to most of the Pelicans runs. Justine Cerda had five hits over both games for the Cavers. Grants Pass’ Chelsea Chamberlain struck out eight to pick up the pitching win in the opener, and was 2-for-4 at the plate. Allie Farmer went 2-for-4 in Game 2. Kelsey Heider gave up three hits and one run in the opener. The Eagles’ Shannon Richardson went 2-for-4 with a double in each contest. Bailey Hasty had two doubles, a triple, scored a run and knocked in another for Ashland (7-16, 0-12 SOC) in the twin bill.
