June 03. 2015 12:01AM Mail Tribune 100, June 3, 1915 June 3, 1915 BURGLAR CACHE FOUND IN JUNGLES OF BEAR CREEK In a raid upon the "jungles" along Bear Creek near McAndrews ford this morning, Sheriff Singler and Constable Hammond found a burglar cache and believe they have found a hot trail to the Rogue River bank robbery and hold-up of the Grants Pass depot, recent daring crimes in this section. Fred Chipp is held in custody, three others made their escape, though chased through the heavy underbrush for half an hour by the officers. Evidence of two crimes were found in the loot taken from the cache. Articles stolen from the Cranfill & Robinett store in Central Point last winter, and in the recent robbery of a general merchandise store at Eugene were found. Hats, gloves, shoes and blankets were the principal articles recovered. The gang was cooking lunch when the officers arrived. Two members were at the creek getting water. When they saw the sheriff and constable, they ran. Constable Hammond gave chase, but after a half-hour run gave it up. The men uncaught are wanted for an interview on the bank and depot robberies. The authorities received the tip this morning, and were told that the men were heavily armed.   STEPS TO ORGANIZE WATER USERS LEAGUE Further steps toward the formation of the Water Users' league will be taken at a meeting to be held at the public library this afternoon, when the committee appointed to frame bylaws will meet. ... Many opponents of irrigation expected May to be one long shower. Instead, the rainfall shows a deficiency. This has had the effect of an increasing interest in the plan for water. Many farmers and orchardists have taken steps toward digging wells to provide moisture for the coming season.
