Oregon State Police said speed and alcohol are believed to have contributed to the crash, which occurred minutes before 2 p.m. on the Redwood Highway near Wonder. Dead is pickup truck occupant Virginia Tyler, 72, and injured is the driver of the truck, Larry E. Tyler, 73, both of Kerby. Car driver Gary J. Martinich, 61, of Brookings also was killed in the wreck. Martinich's northbound 2016 Nissan Altima had just begun passing other traffic using a passing lane when it veered across the double-yellow center line and struck the southbound pickup truck, according to OSP. "Speed and alcohol are both being investigated as contributing factors in the crash," OSP reported, in a news release. The case remains under investigation. The crash snarled traffic for miles. The highway, initially closed, fully reopened after about two hours. Assisting at the scene were Rural/Metro Fire Department, AMR ambulance, the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Oregon Department of Transportation. A Rural/Metro crew arriving at the scene found occupants trapped in both vehicles, with the red truck on fire, according to Rural/Metro Division Chief Austin Prince. Firefighters performed a "rapid extrication" and suppressed the fire.
