Journalists at the Mail Tribune won eight awards in a five-state contest, including three first places, in the 2018 Northwest Excellence in Journalism contest announced Thursday night in Portland. The rest were runners-up, the only other award given in the contest, hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists' Region 10. The Mail Tribune competed against newspapers with staffs of 17-39 in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. Here are the results: Mike Oxendine, first place in Sports Reporting, for “Mom on a Mission ”; Andy Atkinson, first place in Sports Action Photography, for “ So Close: South Medford vs. Clackamas ”; Tim Trower, first place in Sports Column, for “Tee Talk”; Tim Trower, runner-up in Sports Reporting, for “ Know Your Role ”; Vickie Aldous, runner-up in Investigative Reporting, for “ Waiting for Tragedy ”; Paul Bunch, runner-up, Graphics & Illustrations, for Holidays in the Rogue Valley special section cover; "Up in Smoke" illustration for Oregon Outdoors; and Redemption at Last , illustration for Ryan Pfeil’s "Marley" series; Gary Nelson, runner-up, Editorial & Commentary, for his editorials on “ Truth, lies and political reporting ”; “ 'Sanctuary’ law less than it appears ”; and Ethics panel ruling a head-scratcher ”; Ryan Pfeil and Vickie Aldous, Investigative Video Reporting, for “ Waiting for Tragedy ”; Robert Galvin, Column, for “Get Off My Lawn.”
