Cogdill placed ninth in the 1,500 meters in a meet that attracted nearly a dozen Northwest colleges, but her time of 4 minutes, 45.33 seconds distinguished her at SOU. She broke the 1977 record of 4:47.00, set by Vicky Rager. "She’s talented, and I envision that record being improved upon," said Raiders coach Mike Jones. "She should do better than that before the season’s through." The women's 4x400 relay team of Andrea Eide, Rachel Hinze, Brook Jaentsch and Megan Heuberger clocked the school's fourth-fastest mark ever (3:58.97), which was one-hundredth of a second better than the 2003 season’s best. Eide also was third in the 200 in 26.27. On the men’s side, junior Nick Hanson finished second in the triple jump with a 47-5¾ effort, the school's longest mark since Jamie Dixon's 1969 school record of 51-11½ . The Boise State transfer's performance eclipsed his previous season-best by more than seven inches. Tyler Nitzke was third in the 200 in 22.48 and anchored the runner-up 4x400 relay that clocked 3:26.60. His runningmates were Kento Kawamura, Ross Dexter and Dusty Waugh. Softball SOU TAKES TWO — At Hayward, Calif., the 22nd-ranked Southern Oregon softball team won pool play with a 2-1 record at the four-team Cal State-Hayward Invitational Saturday. The Raiders (6-3) defeated Dominican University 2-1 and 21st-ranked Notre Dame de Namur 6-5 in nine innings before suffering an 8-1 setback to Cascade Conference rival Oregon Tech. SOU faces NDNU in today’s 10:30 a.m. semifinal round, with the winner opposing either Dominican or OIT in the 1:30 p.m. finale. Sophomore dropballer Amanda Cregan (3-1) was the pitcher of record in both SOU wins. Against Dominican, the North Medford High graduate allowed a run and three hits in the first inning before retiring 18 consecutive Penguin hitters. She struck out the side in the seventh for the complete-game triumph. Cregan hurled 42/3 scoreless innings of relief against Notre Dame de Namur to help SOU overcome a 5-2 deficit. SOU scored twice with two out in the bottom of the seventh, including the equalizer on an RBI double by former Crater High star Leann Foster. Two innings later under the international tiebreaker format, junior all-star Haley Varley singled in Seanna Doyel from third base with two outs for the game-winning run.
