But the Comets turned that around with a doubleheader sweep of Roseburg (9-10, 4-8 SOC) Saturday at Anhorn Field. Crater rode the four-hit pitching of senior Kevin Mulder to a 4-1 victory in the opener, then rallied for a dramatic, 7-6 win in the nightcap. "We were due," first-year Crater coach Jim Powell said. "We have not been able to produce runs." Advertisement In Game 2, Crater (9-9, 5-7 SOC) found itself trailing 6-1 with one out in the bottom of the seventh before Colin Schoonover began the tying rally with a single. Five hits later, Mulder evened the game at 6-all with a bases-clearing double. In the eighth, Crater’s Joe Kahut doubled with one out and Thomas Hammond tripled to end the game. "What was good to see was nobody was willing to let the team down," said Powell. "Everybody went up there with a purpose. Once we tied the game up, that ignited the kids." Hammond led the attack with three hits and three RBIs. "Today, he (Hammond) was consistent on a day when we needed him to play like that," said Powell. In the opener, Mulder didn’t record a strikeout and went the distance to even his conference mark at 3-3. "Kevin doesn’t have an overpowering fastball," said Powell. "He kept their hitters off-balance and mainly worked on location." Powell credited senior catcher Mike Peila with assisting Mulder. "Mike Peila did a great job behind the plate calling the game," said Powell. "He helped Kevin make the pitches he needed to get the outs." The Comets broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the sixth. Adam Reed opened with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double by Adam Teaters. Andrew Norum followed with a two-run homer for the final margin of victory. GRANTS PASS 4-4, EAGLE POINT 2-14 — At Eagle Point, Tyson Nelson and David Hinkle each went 4-for-4 to lead Eagle point in the nightcap of the SOC split. The Eagles (11-10, 4-8 SOC) had 16 hits in Game 2. Nelson also was 2-for-3 in the first game. Ryan Augino and Carl Christian also had two hits for Eagle Point.
