Calkins of Jackson county will preside at the hearing of the contempt cases brought by the Macleay estate against the fishermen employed by the Seaborg cannery who are accused of trespass upon the Macleay property and of such illegal acts as attempting to burn the Wedderburn cannery and destroy nets with acid, when the circuit court meets at Gold Beach on August 24. The fishermen's war will be threashed out before the Jackson county magistrate instead of Judge Coke. Governor Withycombe has appointed Col. B.K. Lawson, formerly warden of the penitentiary, to act as special agent for the state on Rogue River, to preserve the peace and end the reign of lawlessness. Eighty-three of the fishermen were enjoined in the circuit court from trespassing on the Wedderburn company's property, and a few days ago Judge Coke was petitioned to cite nine of these men to show cause why they should not be arrested for contempt of court in violating the injunction. The case came up yesterday at Coquille and Judge Coke put the whole matter over until August 24, when the circuit court at Gold Beach, county seat of Curry county, will convene. There is a big run of fish reported at the mouth of the Rogue River now. It is stated that one of the canneries received 800 fish Monday, and one got 600 Chinooks Tuesday. The price of fish has been raised by the canneries. The Seaborg cannery is now paying 75 cents for each fish, and the Macleay cannery is paying a sliding scale of $1.25 for the big fish, $1 for the next size and 54 cents for the smaller ones. The result is, it is reported, that the Seaborg fishermen are trading their big fish to the Macleay fishermen, who turn them in for $1.25. Seaborg's fishermen take in return the small ones which would bring in only 65 cents at the Macleay cannery and selling them to the Seaborg cannery for 75 cents.
