Two 35-year-old motorists die in crash near Eagle Point By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Dec 15, 2021 01:08 PM A A Police have identified two 35-year-old women as the drivers killed in a head-on crash in Highway 62 outside Eagle Point. Whitney Smith, 35, of Medford, and Elyse Hines, 35, of Eagle Point, died in the two vehicle head-on crash north of Eagle Point near the Hammel Road intersection, according to a release issued Wednesday from Oregon State Police. Smith was driving a Chevrolet Cruze sedan in the oncoming lane — reportedly in an attempt to pass an uninvolved vehicle attempting to make a left turn onto Hammel Road ahead of her — when the Chevy ultimately collided with Hines driving a Subaru Legacy in her lane. Hines died at the scene, and Smith was rushed to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where she ultimately died from her injuries. The crash investigation closed the roadway for more than three hours Tuesday night, according to OSP and earlier Oregon Department of Transportation reports.
