Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend September 25, 2005 Stoutenburgh shines at Northwest Classic EUGENE — Crater senior Isaac Stoutenburgh won the boys invitational 5K at the 13th Northwest Cross Country Classic at Lane Community College Saturday. Stoutenburgh came off the pace to beat Brad Taylor of Oakridge by 16 seconds. Stoutenburgh’s winning time was 15 minutes, 30 seconds. Crater’s boys finished third with a score of 141. Hermiston totaled a low score of 56 to win the boys team competition, while Jesuit (89 points) finished second in the 17-team field. After the first mile, Stoutenburgh was in 10th position, about 15 seconds off the leader. He picked up the pace and overtook Taylor with about 1,000 meters to go. "(Stoutenburgh) started off with the team for the first mile," said Crater coach Justin Loftus. "He reeled the No. 1 guy in but it made me a little worried that he had to make up that much ground." Advertisement The Comets got a strong performance from junior Jake Keyser, who finished third (15:59). Other Crater runners who contributed to the team performance were Ryan Santana (42nd, 17:45), Caleb Jacobson (43rd, 17:46) and Casey Mundel (54th, 18:02). In girls, the Comets finished fifth. The top four Crater girls were only 40 seconds apart. Sophomore Laurie Stoutenburgh was the fastest Crater runner at 23rd (20:44), while junior Kristen Haga placed 25th (20:50). Senior Jan Frodsham of South Medford produced the top local individual performance at 22nd (20:43). Jennifer Macias, a Hermiston junior, won the individual race with a time of 18:37. Jesuit was the team champion with 34 points, followed by Tualatin (63) and Hermiston (104). Crater had a 127 total. In the girls open division, Hidden Valley’s Ashley Gilkey won with a mark of 19:13 and the Mustangs finished second (101) to Crescent Valley (73). Hidden Valley was runner-up in the boys open division to Tualatin. Dustin Filipek was the Mustangs top placer at ninth (17:33). STANFORD INVITATIONAL — At Stanford, Calif., the Ashland girls and North Medford boys came up with a strong showing by finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, in their divisions. The Grizzlies, who were fourth out of 25 teams in Division I, were led by Natalie Hemphill’s third-place finish with a time of 18:54. Teammate Alyssa Taylor was 31st in 20:46, while Haley Beal took 33rd with a time of 20:47. Also in girls, North Medford junior Brittney Dunn was 12th (19:40) and helped the Black Tornado to ninth place out of 35 teams. Other top North runners were Jade Severson (17th, 19:53) and Statia Smith (45th, 20:39). In boys, junior Rick Nielsen was the top Black Tornado runner with a 26th- place finish in a time of 16:59 for the 5K race in Division II. Teammate Garrett Frierson was clocked with the same time as Nielsen and was one spot behind. North sophomore Richard Zhu finished 49th (17:20). Ashland, led by Cameron Barleen’s 43rd-place finish with a time of 17:16, took 11th in the team standings and Klamath Union was 19th. In the small schools Division V, the St. Mary’s boys finished ninth out of 22 schools and the Crusader girls were 11th. Mike Seus was fourth individually in the boys race, clocking 17:10, while Lindsay Gasik finished 14th among the girls in 21:17. Football CHILOQUIN 52, ST. MARY’S 20 — Chiloquin led just 14-12 at halftime in the Southern Cascade League opener but pulled away in the second half. Ryan Greene scored a pair of touchdowns for St. Mary’s, which fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the SCL. Brian Adesman scored St. Mary’s final touchdown on a 15-yard run and led the Crusaders in rushing with 49 yards on nine carries. Chiloquin (2-1, 1-0 SCL) pounded the Crusaders for 432 yards rushing and had 458 yards in total offense. St. Mary’s ran for 86 yards and produced 63 yards passing.
