The 19th-ranked Raiders (23-5, 10-1 Cascade) broke open a scoreless game through five innings en route to a 6-0 Game 1 victory before the Mountaineers (13-12, 6-7) rebounded for a 5-2 result in Game 2. In the first game, SOU sophomore center fielder Leann Foster (a single), senior third baseman Alexis Cooper (a double) and junior catcher Carla Lillis (a double) each had RBI hits with two outs in a four-run Raider sixth inning that tipped a pitching duel between SOU ace Miranda Gillaspie and EOU’s Shannon Rasmussen. Gillaspie (13-2) finished with a five-hit shutout and extended her personal win streak to 11 games. The Mountaineers, however, never trailed in Game 2 after scoring three runs in the second inning off Raider sophomore starter Amanda Cregan (7-2). Advertisement Southern loaded the bases and scored twice to move within 3-2 in the fifth frame, but the Mounties added insurance when Casi Reisenauer stroked a two-run single with two out in the bottom half of the inning against Gillaspie. Mountaineer junior pitcher Jayne-Leigh Thomas, who allowed nine hits in going the distance, also halted SOU’s nine-game win streak against Eastern dating back to 2002. Junior all-star Haley Varley went 5-for-8 in the twin bill, while junior shortstop Kara Ray was 4-for-7. Track and Field HANSON, HEUBERGER LEAD RAIDERS — At Klamath Falls, junior Nick Hanson turned in two lifetime bests in winning the long and triple jumps at the Oregon Tech Invitational. Hanson’s leap of 49 feet, 5 inches ranks fourth in the NAIA. "That’s a 2-foot personal best, which is pretty phenomenal," said head coach Mike Jones. On the women’s side, senior Megan Heuberger turned in a season best of 1:03.8 in the 400 intermediate hurdles to earn an automatic bid to the national championships. Oregon Tech won both the men’s and women’s portions of the dual meet. RELAY TEAM QUALIFIES — At Gresham, the 4x800 meter relay team of Ross Dexter, Dusty Waugh, Jeff Olsen and Trevor Palmer qualified for the NAIA Championships with a school-record time of 7:45.46 at the Mt. Hood Open. The quartet will be SOU’s first in that event at the national meet.
