She has managed to sass her way into our hearts with her unique, fun and undeniably clever songs. Trainor put a damper on Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” when Trainor’s “All About That Bass” hit. The song seemed to come out of nowhere to knock Swift from the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 in September. “All About That Bass” spent an unprecedented eight weeks on top. Ultimately, Swift bounced back up to No. 1, but Trainor had already made a name for herself with the tongue-in-cheek smash. The song quickly sparked a massive social media parody craze, too, which can only mean one thing: The girl is a hit. Swift’s “1989” has pretty much locked the top of the Billboard albums chart since its release, but Trainor this week replaces Swift with her debut album, “Title.” I’m impressed with Trainor on so many levels. The 21-year-old cleverly managed to carve a niche in a genre dominated by pop queens by singing a song that pretty much exposed a good many of them. Few could have predicted the success of “All About That Bass.” Listeners chose it for its truthfulness, sass and Trainor’s individuality among her musical peers. “Title” is a solid album, too. Plus, the second single “Lips Are Movin” crushes anyone’s thoughts that she would be a one-hit wonder. The single is already at No. 6, while “All About The Bass” holds on to No. 10. “Title” also managed to hold off a debut at No. 1 for Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Special,’” which features the massive No. 1 hit “Uptown Funk” with Bruno Mars. With a couple of catchy tunes under her belt, one might expect the rest of Trainor’s debut to be ho-hum, but that isn’t the case. I’m particularly fond of her girl-group/blue-eyed soul/doo-wop sound combined with her contemporary lyrical charm. It’s a winning combination, and the music is just fun — nothing wrong with that. “Walkashame,” “Mr. Almost,” and “Bang Dem Sticks” carry on the fun, and “Close Your Eyes” and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You,” featuring John Legend, find the singer slowing the tempo to create some sweet pop gems. Trainor missed out on a Best New Artist nomination, but “All About The Bass” has a shot at taking home the Grammy for Song and Record of the Year categories Feb. 8 on CBS. David T.
