Mustangs move into a tie for second MURPHY Josh Hagemeyer proved to be the X factor for Hidden Valley Tuesday. The Mustangs 6-foot-4, 250-pound center went for a season-high 19 points as Hidden Valley defeated Illinois Valley 80-76 in Skyline Conference boys basketball. The victory moves Hidden Valley (13-10, 9-4 Skyline) into a second-place tie with the Cougars (17-6, 9-4 Skyline). The Mustangs finish the regular season at league-leading Henley Friday, while IV visits Phoenix. Hidden Valley coach Bill Jiron was hoping to exploit Hagemeyers big size advantage over 6-2, 220-pound Brandon Henry. Hagemeyer responded with an 8-of-11 effort from the field. But the Mustang first-year coach didnt expect those results. "It was a big, pleasant surprise," said Jiron. "Every time they played man we took it down low. Hags got in position and did a good job of taking it to the hole. "Brandon had to be real careful because if he got in foul trouble, theyre in trouble. He had to play soft." The game featured 13 ties, six lead changes and the biggest lead was nine, a 16-7 Hidden Valley advantage in the first quarter. Hidden Valley trailed by two points entering the final period, but outscored the Cougars 23-17. Kevin Ries led the way with eight of his team-high 20 points in the period. Justin Nevilles long 3-pointer with about 10 seconds left pulled IV to within 78-76, but Ries sank two free throws to seal the win. Neville led all scorers with 26 points and Daniel Houston added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars.
