Charles Ryan wins Britt Woods Firehouse Run By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Jun 11, 2022 09:28 PM A A 3 View all photos JACKSONVILLE — The rain was able to hold off just long enough, and Charles Ryan was able to make his first-ever Britt Woods Firehouse Run a memorable one Saturday morning. The 66-year-old Ryan finished the course in an adjusted time — the race is scored via the Dipsea handicap system, which accounts for age and gender — of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 1 second to claim the overall title in the 10-kilometer run ahead of runner-up Elijah Zavala (1:07:26) and Logan Huffman (1:07:31). Ryan, who used to live locally but now resides in Sisters, was working with a 17-minute head start over the scratch runners in the 43-runner field “Chuck, he had a really good run and you could tell that he was quite fit,” said race director Doug Naversen, who founded the race 20 years ago. “It was supposed to rain on us, but it waited until after the run was over before it rained. It was a little bit sultry and we actually had mosquitoes for the first time in the morning.” Zavala, 15, and Huffman, 16, both run at North Medford High School and were able to pass the top female finisher, Anne Tracy, down the final stretch before hitting the tape to finish second and third, respectively. Tracy, who lives in Jacksonville, finished fourth overall and was the top female finisher with an adjusted time of 1:07:35. “He really has some spring in his legs,” Naversen said of Zavala, a freshman at North. “He finished really strong.” Naversen announced before the race that he is retiring after this year’s race, with Ted Plautz taking over as race director next year. The race has raised over $20,000 for the Jacksonville Engine Company No. 1 — the oldest fire department in Oregon — since its creation. “I started this race 20 years ago and I think this was maybe the smoothest it has ever gone, and we had only two runners get lost today — which was good because it was a tough course,” Naversen said. “I’m 73 and when I started no one even knew where the Britt Woods was.
