Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend November 22, 2005 ‘Kill me,’ arrested man told cops By MARK FREEMAN Mail Tribune A man who told Medford police officers during a confrontation late Sunday that he wanted to be shot was instead subdued by a beanbag fired from a shotgun, authorities said. The beanbag round was fired at Maynor Calderon, 23, as Calderon attempted to get into his vehicle, where a loaded pistol was later found, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. The incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. in the parking lot of a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints office in the 2900 block of Juanipero Way in southeast Medford, George said. After Calderon was taken into custody, he was taken to the Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation before he was lodged Monday in the Jackson County Jail, George said. "This is the kind of case that these types of less-lethal weapons are designed for," George said Monday. "It prevented serious harm to officers and this individual. It was perfect deployment and a perfect outcome." Officers lodged Calderon on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, disorderly conduct and telephonic harassment, George said. He remained jailed late Monday in lieu of $10,000 bail, a jail spokeswoman said. The ordeal began after police received a call that Calderon was possibly armed and making harassing telephone calls to family members from the LDS parking lot, police said. When officers arrived, they found Calderon sitting inside his parked Honda sedan, George said. Calderon initially refused officers’ demands — including demands spoken in Spanish by one of the officers — to step out of the vehicle, police said. Advertisement Eventually, Calderon complied but began yelling "kill me, kill me" after stepping out of the vehicle, police said. When Calderon attempted to return to his vehicle and began to open the car door, Sgt. Mark Boone fired a single beanbag round, George said. Officers found the loaded pistol on the driver’s side floor and marijuana also was seized from the car, George said. No one else was injured, police said.
