http://www.omniture.com --> Email Story to a Friend June 22, 2006 Twins pulled from river By chris conrad Mail Tribune GOLD HILL — An "unauthorized" adventure on the Rogue River Monday afternoon turned treacherous for 13-year-old twins whose makeshift boat overturned near the Powerhouse Rapids. "These two boys of mine — I love them to death — but when they get together, what one doesn't think of the other will," said Sandy Vetch, the boys' mother. According to their parents, Gregory and Richard Vetch had permission to fish along the Gold Nugget Wayside that day, but were ordered to stay clear of a large "kiddie pool-shaped" piece of plastic they'd been eyeing since it washed up near the bank during last February's floods. However, the boys could not resist snatching the relic and reforming it into a boat by jumping on it. They floated near the bank for a short time before the current sucked the "boat" from underneath them. Neither boy was wearing a life jacket. They had to grab low-hanging tree branches to keep from being swept down the river. They pulled themselves along the branches until they reached a rocky island near the Powerhouse Rapids. Realizing they couldn't swim to safety, the boys screamed for help. Finally, they caught the attention of two young girls driving on Upper River Road. The Jackson County Search and Rescue Team was forced to use a helicopter to help the boys, as the island was encircled by rocks. Sandy Vetch learned of her sons' brush with death at a Bible class. "We'd already prayed for them, thank God," she said. The twins walked away with a fair share of bumps and scrapes. They also suffered mildly bruised egos, said father Doug Vetch. "They said, 'Dad, we have a whole new respect for the Rogue River,' " Doug Vetch added. Remorseful or not, the boys will spend the next week pulling weeds around the yard, Doug Vetch said. Sandy Vetch was careful not to find too much humor in the situation. "That river is dangerous, kids need to know that," she added.
