Eleanor Roosevelt League honors Tumbleson, others Treva Tumbleson of Ashland, a longtime Democratic Party activist, is the winner of this year's Newton-Bosworth Award of the Eleanor Roosevelt League. She received the award last week at the 49th annual Roosevelt-Kennedy dinner of Jackson County Democrats. Tumbleson, 72, is a former president of the league, which represents Jackson County Democratic women. She was a candidate for the 2nd District congressional nomination in 1990 and an Oregon delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1996. She is a former actress and drama teacher. The Newton-Bosworth Award is named in honor of two of the league's founders, Myrtle Newton of Ashland, who died in 1992, and Marie Bosworth of Jacksonville, who died in 1981. Two other awards were given last week. Leon Guild of Medford received the Gary Newton Grassroots Award for his work on the party newsletter. Arthur Smith of Shady Cove won the Roar of the Tiger Award for his outspokenness in promoting the party and its principles. The latter award honors the nickname of Wayne Morse, U.S. senator from Oregon who began his 24-year career as a Republican and ended it as a Democrat.
