Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 21, 2005 Top-ranked Southern Oregon men overcome the pesky Geoducks, 52-49 Raider Roundup ASHLAND — Stalwart last-second defense allowed the top-ranked Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team to survive a major scare from Evergreen State College and emerge with a 52-49 Cascade Conference victory at McNeal Pavilion Tuesday night. The Raiders (14-1, 3-0 CC) won their 13th consecutive contest and 11th straight at home only after Geoduck freshman guard Luke Hammond missed a well- defended 21-foot desperation 3-pointer over the outstretched arms of SOU wing RaShawn McAllister as time expired. After pulling within 50-49 on a Pat Mattson layup with 52 seconds left, the Geoducks (5-8, 1-2) stole a Raider post-entry pass 14 ticks later but the Olympia, Wash. school was denied a chance for a go-ahead basket when SOU All-American forward Shea Washington hauled in an errant Hammond pass at the top of the key and proceeded to convert two critical free throws with 11 seconds to go. Senior guard Steve Farley, who canned a season-high four 3-pointers, scored 14 points for SOU, which led by as much as nine in the second half (37-28) and 48-43 with three minutes left before the final Evergreen surge. Washington finished with 12 points and six rebounds — well under his season averages — against the swarming 2-3 Geoduck defense. "We’re getting great shots, not inside, but we’re getting great shots and at some point we’ll start making more of them," Raider coach Brian McDermott said. "(Evergreen) really packed it in on top of Shea, and we need to figure out a way to get him more than five shots against the zone." Advertisement Mattson, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, mustered a game-high 19 points to help Evergreen overcome a 34-23 rebounding deficit. SOU, which led 28-23 at halftime, shot 41 percent (18 of 44) and 36 percent from beyond the arc (8 of 22). Meanwhile, the deliberate Geoducks committed only six turnovers and finished 20-for-44 from the field (46 percent) The Raiders host league rival Northwest University tonight, while the Clams travel to Oregon Tech. Women EVERGREEN STATE 53, SOUTHERN OREGON 52 — At Ashland, Southern Oregon forced 30 turnovers, collected 23 steals and held Evergreen State to 34 percent shooting, but it wasn't enough in a Cascade Conference loss at McNeal Pavilion. After trailing 49-35 with six minutes remaining, a steal and breakaway layup by freshman forward Kasi Backer gave the Raiders (8-6, 1-2 CC) a 52-51 edge, but a pair of free throws by junior center Rachel Ross with 29 ticks left turned out to be the game-winning points for the first-place Geoducks (5-7, 3- 0). SOU, which missed 42 of its 60 shots and also committed 30 turnovers, fell on its home court after sophomore guard Chelsey Zimmerman missed a 40-foot 3- point attempt as time expired.
