Cottage Grove girls down Phoenix in soccer contest, 3-2 PHOENIX - Samantha Stewart scored two unassisted breakaway goals late in the second half to lead the Cottage Grove girls soccer team to a 3-2 win over Phoenix on Wednesday. The Pirates blew two leads in the contest to fall to 1-3-1 on the season. "We had this game but let it go," said Phoenix coach John Doty, whose team outshot Cottage Grove 22-5. "We had opportunities but couldn't finish." Phoenix broke up a scoreless halftime tie with a goal by Larrisa Wiltrout off a crossing pass from Kim Tiger early in the second half. But the Lions answered almost immediately when Andrea Bayles found the net on a direct kick. The Pirates took its final lead when Hannah Wilt booted home a pass from Wiltrout. Despite the absence of senior captain Helen Shoreland - rehabbing an ankle injury - Phoenix received a solid effort from freshman Sarah Woodland. Playing in her first varsity action, Woodland filled it at midfielder in the first half. "She had arguably the most consistent minutes out of anyone on our team," said Doty. "She didn't do anything that hugely stood out, but she play consistently and had a solid match for somebody who wasn't expecting to see the field."   Mail Tribune Home | Ottaway Newspapers, Inc. | Dow Jones & Co., Inc. | Privacy | Contact Us Copyright 2001 Mail Tribune, Inc.
