Rogue Eats holds a spot in the Rogue Valley Mall food court but recently opened a new location at 137 S. Central Ave. A yearning for handmade ice cream was the motive behind our trip. The menu, colorfully written on a chalkboard that spans two walls, boasts 16 options you can have in a wrap, salad, rice bowl, house bun or gluten-free waffle. Patrons can also make their own creation from a diverse selection of ingredients. I chose the Roots ($8) — spring mix, roasted vegetables, black bean salsa and basil pesto aioli — in a rice bowl. My mom ordered the Wild Waffle ($9.50) on the wheat house bun, which included smoked salmon, caramelized onions, capers and chevre. The room adjacent to the entrance was painted a refreshing titanium white. The simple color made the small space feel large and roomy. Mirrors and artsy photos of food hung from the walls, giving the restaurant a modern vibe. Our orders arrived promptly, and my rice bowl was well seasoned and bursting with flavor. The tender vegetables included carrots, onions and zucchini. The basil pesto aioli coated each forkful and added a nice bite to the dish. Unfortunately, some of the vegetables weren’t as warm as others, which left cool spots in the rice bowl. My mom said the bun used for the Wild Waffle was one of the best she’d ever eaten. She could taste the smokiness of the salmon, which we learned is smoked on site without any nitrates. The caramelized onions also earned high praise. We were told the onions are cooked with olive oil for four hours or so. The final product was full of flavor and with just the right texture. My mom’s sandwich was well-proportioned; not too much or too little salmon in each bite. After our meal, we returned to the front counter for ice cream. While waiting for another customer in front of us, I glanced behind me and saw a tall, glass refrigerator used to store pies in old-fashioned diners. This one housed several giant cinnamon rolls and cookies. I’ll be back for one of those cinnamon rolls. At the counter, we sampled several ice creams. The strawberry basil boasted an intense strawberry flavor with the slightest hint of fresh basil. I could see the chopped up basil throughout the ice cream. I also sampled the peach lavender and chose that for my larger serving. We moved outside and I dug into my ice cream, which was smooth, creamy and thick. I’m not a huge lover of peaches, but the peach flavor was divine. It was the ice cream equivalent of biting into a juicy peach on a hot summer afternoon. Notes of lavender brought another level of sweetness. It was a refreshing flavor combination and good way to end the meal. Rogue Eats and Treats combines a modern eatery with all the comforting flavors of a small-town diner. It’s a breath of fresh air for those traveling in downtown who want a modern, fun meal. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
