Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 12, 2006 Lubonski, Engle fuel Phoenix triumph over Mustangs Prep Softball MURPHY — Emily Lubonski came up with the big hit and Talia Engle made it stand up for Phoenix’s softball team Tuesday. The Pirates defeated Hidden Valley 7-2 to even their Skyline Conference record at 2-2. Lubonski ripped a bases-loaded triple to highlight a five-run fifth inning and put Phoenix in command. The game was tied 2-2 entering the frame. Thereafter, Engle finished off her four-hitter without allowing another run. Until the fifth, the Pirates couldn’t get their offense going. Advertisement "It was much needed," said Phoenix coach Brent Watts. "We were just hitting the ball at people up to that point. Then we found a few holes." Rebecca Singleton started the rally with a double and Engle walked. Singleton scored on Tera Fry’s fielder’s-choice grounder, and after an out, Taylor Barrett was hit by a pitch to load the bases. That set the stage for Lubonski’s hit down the right-field line. She then scored on Miranda Barajas’ single. Engle needed only 78 pitches to record seven strikeouts and one walk. "She let her defense work a lot," said Watts. "She did a nice job of challenging hitters. She didn’t go deep in the count too many times. It was nice, especially on a wet, soggy field." Lubonski, Barajas and Singleton all had two hits. Pitcher Karly Lusk had six strikeouts and gave up two hits and no walks for Rogue River (6-3 overall, 4-1 Skyline). Henley pitcher Jessie Driessen gave up only one hit.
