Shorland boots Pirate girls to 4-0 soccer win CAVE JUNCTION -- Freshman Helen Shorland has been quite an addition to the Phoenix girls soccer team this season. Shorland scored one goal and assisted on another as the Pirates defeated Illinois Valley 4-0 Saturday to lock up second place in the final regular-season District 6 match. The Pirates (8-3-3) open the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs against Glide at Hagler-James Park in Talent Saturday. Shorland scored in the second minute for her ninth goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Annie Kulig. "She's got the confidence to play at the high-school level because of her club experience," Phoenix coach Dan Sporrer said. "She has a knack for being at the right place at the right time. She has good anticipation." The Pirates didn't score again until early in the second half by Jennifer Bones off an assist from Kulig. In the 55th minute, defender Christina Newcomb converted her first goal of the season, then Amber Frey completed the scoring on a Shorland assist at the 63-minute mark. Phoenix junior goalie Tara Curtis registered her seventh shutout of the season. Curtis has posted a .79 goal average on the year. "The key to our season was the two wins each over Henley and Mazama," said Sporrer. "Those are both good, solid teams to come away with four wins." HENLEY 1, ST. MARY'S 0 -- At Klamath Falls, Henley needed a win to advance into the state playoffs as the District 6 No. 3 team, but it didn't come easy. The Hornets dominated the contest, but Katie Millard scored the game's only goal midway through the second half. Henley opens the playoffs Saturday at Sutherlin. ROGUE RIVER 2, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 -- At Rogue River, Shae Wright and Keri Cain recorded goals, but defending District 6 champion Rogue River failed to make the state playoffs. The Chieftains (7-4-3) needed St. Mary's to tie or defeat Henley on the final day of the regular season. Rogue River junior forward Alison Marland kept the pressure on the Mustangs' defense despite not putting the ball into the net. NORTH VALLEY 7, MAZAMA 2 -- At Merlin, Ashley Enoch scored four goals to help North Valley complete the District 6 season with a perfect 14-0 record. The Knights will host Marist of Eugene in the second round of the Class 3A/2A/1A playoffs Nov. 10. Julia Arnado scored on a penalty kick and Marissa Bauer and Denise Leonard also added goals for the Knights. Dena Young paced Mazama (6-6-2) with a goal and an assist, while Megan Bishop also scored for the Vikings. Boys soccer ST. MARY'S 5, EAGLE POINT JV 2 -- At Eagle Point, Gabe Schonerd and Jordan Frimkess scored two goals each for St. Mary's (9-2-1) in a non-conference match. The Crusaders are advancing to the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs for the first time and will open at Pleasant Hill Saturday. Alden Eagle scored the Crusaders other goal, while Brad Crawford accounted for both Eagle Point scores. Volleyball ROGUE RIVER 11-15-15, PHOENIX 15-7-8 -- At Rogue River, Phoenix had Rogue River in trouble after winning the opening game and leading 5-0 in the second in the best-of-3 Skyline Conference elimination match. Rogue River plays at North Valley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to determine the conference's No. 3 team in the Class 3A state playoffs. Rogue River, Phoenix and North Valley faced a playoff for the league's final post season berth after tying for third in the conference standings. The Rogue River-North Valley winner plays at Waldport Saturday. Krista Worthington's serving proved pivotal for the Chieftains. Worthington served five straight points to pull Rogue River even at 5-5 in Game 2, then broke a 6-6 tie in the final game with four straight points. Kelly Hansen finished off the Pirates with two aces to end the match. Senior middle blocker Melissa Badley had 10 kills and four stuff blocks to lead the Chiefs' front line. Amber Goodwin and Worthington combined for 13 kills. Becky Grinde had 11 digs for Rogue River. PROSPECT 15-15, NEW HOPE 8-8 -- At Grants Pass, Kary Linderman had eight aces and Monica Applegate chipped in five to lead Prospect to the Skyline A League Southern Division victory. Applegate's serves rallied Prospect from a 6-4 deficit to a 9-6 lead in the second game. Addie Stockebrand added three kills and closed out the second game with the last four service points.
