"Exactly where we’re building is exactly where I used to hunt pheasant," said the 40-year-old pastor at Table Rock Fellowship, who grew up in the Rogue Valley. He said in spite of the encroachment on wildlife habitat, he’s excited about the future home for himself, his wife, Kelly, and their four children, ages 5, 7, 9, and 11. He said the attraction to the new subdivision is that their children will attend Hoover Elementary School, they’ll live on a cul-de-sac, and they’ll live in a home that’s "nice looking" without being "lavish." And the move-in date’s just around the corner. "I’m thinking that we’re going to be in there around June, or July at the latest," he said. With construction crews putting on the roofing and siding of the first homes, Medford’s southeast plan is taking shape. The southeast plan is designed to be a pedestrian-friendly community of about 10,000 residents on 1,000 acres east of North Phoenix Road, from the ridge above Cherry Lane south to Coal Mine Road. Summerfield Estates, a development within the southeast plan area, is being developed by Mahar Homes and Mahar Brothers Construction. It will eventually include 218 homes in the northern portion of the southeast plan. Baugh is one of 10 people who have purchased lots to build homes. Randy Jones, co-owner of Mahar Homes, said in this phase of development, the houses will range in size from 1,800 to 3,400 square feet, and prices start at $240,000, which includes landscaping and fencing. "Some are obviously more expensive," he said. Home buyers are offered options, such as granite countertops, special computer wiring, central vacuum systems and jetted tubs, which can add to the basic cost. As the southeast plan continues, said Jones, a variety of homes will be built. "There will be some housing that’s more affordable in future phases," he said. The developers have also begun work on moving Cherry Lane several hundred feet to the south, he said, adding that it will create a safer intersection along North Phoenix Road. He expects the road work to be completed in the next couple of months. Jones said several homes will be ready for their owners this summer. "Medford’s been waiting for this for some time."
