Prep roundup Bartels' homer ignites Phoenix over Yreka, 7-3 Andy Bartels hit a two-run homer that put Phoenix ahead to stay in the fourth inning as the Pirates defeated Yreka 7-3 in non-league baseball on Thursday. Bartels, a junior infielder, also had a single and finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Theron Hull and Drew Pierson added two hits apiece for the defending Class 3A state champion Pirates, who ran their record to 2-0 in the young season. "We lost seven starters from last season's team but the new kids are picking up the slack," Phoenix coach Joe Hagler said. Senior right-hander Jason Denny worked two innings to pick up the victory on the mound. Track GRANTS PASS SWEEPS -- At Grants Pass, Kaci Williams won two events and finished second in another to lead the Grants Pass girls to an overwhelming victory in a four-way meet. The Grants Pass boys used good early-season performances by Jake Zeliff in the discus and Travis Flowers in the javelin and a twin win by Cameron Watts to capture the boys' side of the meet. Williams, who finished second at state in the shot put, unleshed an impressive throw of 38-8 to win her specialty. Williams also won the discus and finished second in the high jump. Zeliff uncorked a toss of 152-10 to win the discus, while Flowers tossed the javelin 171-7. Watts won the long jump (19-2) and triple jump (39-8).
