Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 19, 2005 Sandwich shop robbery puts Medford total higher than ’04 By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune A pistol-toting man Tuesday morning held up a Quizno’s sandwich shop on Biddle Road, the 39th robbery in Medford this year. The lone suspect entered the restaurant at about 10 a.m. and gave a female employee a threatening note saying he was robbing the store and had a gun, Medford police Lt. Tim George said. The suspect then produced a small-caliber handgun and pointed it at the employee. The restaurant had just opened for business and there were no patrons inside. The employee was alone with the suspect after her co-worker had left briefly, George said. At one point the man reached across the counter and grabbed the money in the till and fled through a rear east door. He passed by the second clerk who was returning to the restaurant. Instead of calling the police immediately after the robbery, the clerk phoned Medford’s other Quizno’s on Stewart Avenue. Police received the 9-1-1 call from the second location, George said. Advertisement Police arrived at the scene in less than two minutes. Shortly after, witnesses along Interstate 5 contacted police saying that a man matching the description of the suspect was trying to cross the freeway near milepost 30. Police arrived with Tiko the police dog, who searched the area but was unable to find the man, George said. The suspect is described as a white male between 40 and 50 years old. He has dark hair and a mustache and was wearing an olive green stocking cap, a navy blue long-sleeve shirt and dark pants. George said that the brief call made by the clerk to the other Quizno’s did not hamper police in their attempt to capture the suspect. But he did have some advice for robbery victims. "The first call should always come to [police]," he said. "Response times are crucial. That little bit of lead time can make the difference in making a case or not." The restaurant remained open following the robbery. The "shaken up" clerk was sent home for the day, said a Quizno’s employee who asked not to be named. "Our employees are instructed in what to do in case of a robbery," the employee said. "From what I hear, she handled it well." Tuesday’s heist was Medford’s 39th of the year — one more than robberies committed in 2004.
