Edgar Hee, chairman of the Bicycle Task Force, told the council that although the change would reduce the number of car lanes from four to two near the intersection, traffic isn’t heavy enough in that area to require four lanes. He said even though bike lanes are sporadic along Hillcrest, that particular section is especially steep. "The lack of bicycle lanes presents significant safety problems for cyclists in that area," he said. East McAndrews currently ends at Hillcrest Road with a stop sign. The proposed change would put a stop sign on eastbound Hillcrest at East McAndrews, allowing eastbound McAndrews and westbound Hillcrest traffic to continue without stopping. Advertisement Cory Crebbin, public works director, said the new intersection design makes Hillcrest and McAndrews "fairly seamless." "We want to make McAndrews more attractive to a driver," he said. Crebbin said the way the streets are now, trucks and buses have trouble making the right turn onto East McAndrews when they’re coming down Hillcrest. He said staff supported the modification of adding the bike lanes. Delta Center postponed In other business, the council decided to indefinitely postpone the consideration of the appeal of the Delta Center proposal. The Delta Center is a 29-acre planned unit development on Crater Lake Highway, across Delta Waters Road from the Olive Garden restaurant. The developer, Chris Galpin, alleges the city did not respond to his application within the required time and in April he filed a petition in Jackson County Circuit Court. The action will send the issue to a trial by judge. In March the Medford Planning Commission had rejected his application citing traffic and access problems. Because the issue is now before the court, the city does not have jurisdiction over it right now, said Lori Cooper, assistant city attorney.
