Mark Templeton, a 57-year-old venture capitalist from Los Altos, Calif., drowned Sunday after he was thrown from his inflatable kayak at Wildcat Rapids and became wedged in rocks underwater. After an earlier recovery effort failed Monday, a team of specialists in swiftwater and rope rescue were able to remove the body Thursday. Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel said at about 4 p.m. Thursday that he received word through a ham operator that the recovery effort was successful. The Rogue River Canyon makes it impossible to use cellphones. The body was due to be taken by watercraft to Marial, to be handed off to mortuary personnel, the sheriff said. A report on the drowning will be forwarded to the Oregon State Marine Board. Templeton was wearing a helmet and a life jacket when he spilled out of his inflatable kayak while on a guided trip. Wildcat Rapids, a Class III-rated rapid, is about 5 miles downstream from Grave Creek boat landing, the start of the 34-mile, permit-only Wild Section of the Rogue. To aid the recovery effort, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cut back water releases from Lost Creek Dam by 10 percent.
