Hahn will perform Dvorak's Violin Concerto sandwiched between the orchestra's performances of Mozart's Symphony No. 35, "Haffner," and Shostakovich's Symphony No. Nine. John McGrosso, violinist with the Arianna String Quartet, will give a talk an hour before the show. The birthday boys would be 250 and 100, respectively. The 26-year-old, Grammy-winning Hahn (for a 2001 disc of music by Brahms and Stravinsky) was named America's best young classical musician by Time magazine in 2001 and now plays with top orchestras all over the world. A native of Virginia whose family moved to Baltimore, Md., when she was 3, she began playing the violin before age 4 and studied with Klara Berkovich, a native of Odessa, in what was then the Soviet Union. Hahn was admitted to Philadelphia's prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in 1990 when she was 10 years old and made her major orchestra debut a year-and-a-half later with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. At 16, she signed a recording deal with Sony Classical and made her Carnegie Hall debut. She put off graduating from the Curtis Institute for several years before finally taking her degree at age 19. She is known for her Bach repertoire. One observation that comes up again and again is that her recordings fail to do justice to her charismatic live performances.
