Did that put a strain on the postal system? — Geoff H. Medford To be sure, the spate of election mailings filled everybody’s mailbox in recent weeks. A clerk at the Medford Post Office bulk mail desk told us that it was the largest batch of election-cycle mailings she could remember. Anticipating heavy activity, the postal service issued a memo to political customers giving deadlines that would assure mailings arrived before election day. Advertisement Standard mail using permits had to be in by Oct. 27, while pre-sorted first-class bulk mailings had to be at the post office by Oct. 29. The postal service also advised its political customers that registered voters sometimes receive mail at different addresses than their address of record. Per piece costs varied depending on how many zones were covered by mailings. But the usual bulk election cost was .222 cents per piece.
