Lightning is not the key reason for the notice — thunderstorms aren't forecast until Saturday — but rather the low humidity and steady winds with gusts of up to 20 mph. "Any fire start could grow quickly," said meteorologist Frederic Bunnag. The affected area stretches north from Jackson County well into Douglas County, south almost to the Mount Shasta area, west to the Oregon Coast and east to the Cascades. High temperatures of 100 to 110 degrees are predicted through Saturday, and nighttime lows will likely drop only to the low 70s or high 60s.  Weather officials are calling the heat a "one-in-five" heat event, or high, sustained temperatures that have about a 20 percent chance of occurring year to year.  Residents are advised to drink plenty of water, limit physical outdoor activity if possible, and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to reduce the chance of heat-spurred maladies. Pets and children should not be left unattended in parked vehicles.  "There is higher risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke," a notice from the Weather Service said. "Those who are elderly, sick or young are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses."  Starting today, the Oregon Department of Forestry has raised the fire-danger level to extreme on the 1.8 million acres of lands it protects in Jackson and Josephine counties. Power equipment, including mowers and chainsaws, will need to be shut down no later than 10 a.m. The cutting and grinding of metal will also be prohibited starting at that time. In addition, a fire watch of at least one hour should take place after the equipment is shut down, ODF officials said. Property owners will be allowed to resume mowing and cutting at 8 p.m. Debris and barrel burning are prohibited.  Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
