By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune Escaping into a world of music and art has provided a rare refuge in the life of one 12-year-old Medford girl. Her father is in prison and her mother works nearly constantly to support the girl and her 8-year-old brother and 10-year-old sister. The family moved to the Rogue Valley recently to escape dangerous relationships and surroundings in California. The girl signed up for the afterschool program offered through the Main One Performing Arts Center operated by Kids Unlimited, a Medford social service agency. Advertisement There, staff members quickly learned that the best way to help this girl to succeed in school and beyond is through creativity. "She really likes music; she likes to draw," says Tom Cole, the agency’s executive director. "For her, it’s been an escape from the reality of domestic violence and abuse." This holiday season, the girl is hoping for a portable CD player, so she can have music wherever she goes. Unlike some kids, she can’t wish for an iPod or MP3 player because her family doesn’t have a computer. Still, she’d appreciate the gift of music, Cole says. Donations of art supplies — paper, markers, pastels, paints — would be welcome, too. "She’s a sweet little thing," Cole says. "We’ve really tried to encourage her involvement with the arts."
