Night skiing canceled MOUNT ASHLAND -- With a low snowpack and no new snow in sight, Ski Ashland on Monday discontinued night skiing until more snow arrives. "Contrary to last year's abundance of early-season snow, this season we have a low early-season snowpack," said Marketing Director Gene Landsmann. "The elimination of night skiing shifts until we receive additional snowfall will help in the retention of the existing snowpack," he said. Ski Ashland reported 20 inches at the mountain's base Monday, with 32 inches on top. Mostly clear skies are forecast through Friday. Day skiing will continue from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The National Weather Service said Monday that the current dry spell is expected to continue through the end of the year. If so, events scheduled for New Year's Eve -- night skiing through 11:30 p.m. followed by fireworks -- may be canceled. But Landsmann hopes that will not be the case.
