Girl killed, 7 hurt in head-on crash A 17-year-old girl was killed and seven other people injured in a head-on collision early Sunday along Highway 199 six miles south of Cave Junction. The girl, Julie Murray of Cave Junction, was the front-seat passenger in a northbound sedan that collided with a southbound sport utility vehicle just before 1 a.m., the Oregon State Police said. The driver of the sedan, 18-year-old Joelle Marie Byrd, and a second passenger, 17-year-old Jennifer Candace Lindsey, were also injured and taken to Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass. Byrd was transferred to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland where she was listed in critical condition Sunday night. Lindsey was listed in good condition at the Dimmick campus of Three Rivers Hospital. Both girls are from Cave Junction. Four people in the sport utility were injured: driver Ramakishna Kamat, 27, of San Jose, Calif., and three passengers, 26-year-old Shanker Padmanabhan of Mountain View, Calif., 27-year-old Binod Kumar Radhakrishnan of Hayward, Calif., and Venugopal Balasubramoman of Mountain View. All four were treated and released at the Washington campus of Three Rivers Hospital in Grants Pass. An off-duty Josephine County sheriff's deputy was the first on the scene but could not save Murray, who police said had run away from home. Police are investigating the crash.
