Leslie James Mathers MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Sep. 16, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Leslie "Jim" James Mathers, aged 91, passed away at his home in Ashland, Ore. Thursday September 11, surrounded by his loving family. It was sudden but not unexpected. Jim was born July 25, 1923 to the late Gerald and Irene Mathers in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended East High School in Sioux City and graduated in 1941. He joined the Army at age 19, where he served in WWII, and attained the rank of Sergeant. After his military service, he attended Morningside College where he received his Bachelor of Science degree and graduated in 1950. On June 10, 1950 he married Phyllis Ullyot, who preceded him in death. Jim was a manager at Graybar Electric in Omaha, Neb. until he retired after 30 years of employment. Jim was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his family first and took special joy in spending time with each of his great-grandchildren. He was an active member of his church and enjoyed watching sporting events. He was known to his family and friends as 'Gonya.' All are blessed that he was a part of our lives. He is survived by his loving daughter, Mary Anne Crandall (Jim); his granddaughter, Melissa Dueck (Jeremy); his grandson, John Elder (Desiree); and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland, Ore.
