Savano shines as North JV wins Freshman pitcher Keri Savano struck out 12 in five innings as the North Medford Junior Varsity handed St. Mary's it first loss of the season Wednesday, 6-1. Savano and Amanda Cregan, who fanned three, combined for a four-hitter. Emily Gardner went 3-for-4 and Anne Blum added two hits to spark the Black Tornado attack. St. Mary's pitcher Lani Brophy struck out eight in absorbing her first loss in four decisions. St. Mary's (6-1) lone run came in the fifth when Nellie Barnard reached on an error and came around to score on an overthrow on her steal attempt at third. Crusader center fielder Sarah Fetty played a strong defensive game, including throwing out a North runner after a fine running catch. Tennis ASHLAND -- Ashland swept all four doubles matches and remained undefeated on the season with a hard-fought 6-3 non-conference boys tennis dual victory over Yreka at Hunter Park Wednesday. The Grizzlies (7-0, 2-0 SOC) won three of four three-set matches. "The third sets and the tiebreakers were falling for us," said Ashland coach Dick Streng. Ashland's Ari Zaslow dropped a three-setter to Rudy Slizewski in the No. 1 singles, but Eric Sharp answered back with a three-set victory of his own for Ashland in the No. 2 spot. "It was probably Eric's best match of the year," said Streng. "He hit over the top of the ball and moved his opponent from corner to corner on the baseline." SINGLES -- Rudy Slizewski, Y, d.
