Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli North girls overwhelm Mountain View Behind pressure defense, eighth-ranked Tornado moves to 5-0 with runaway victory over Cougars By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune Lofty expectations have yet to slow the North Medford girls basketball team. Visiting Mountain View proved to be no match for the eighth-ranked Black Tornado, either. North used its full-court pressure defense and superior size to manhandle the overmatched Cougars in a nonconference game Saturday afternoon, 66-28, to remain unbeaten at 5-0. The Tornado pestered Mountain View into 31 turnovers and held the Cougars to just four points during a decisive run in the third quarter. Advertisement "We really haven’t been satisfied with our defensive effort for a full four quarters," said Tornado coach Tim Karrick. "Today we were more disciplined and focused. That (defensive effort) set up a lot of easy baskets and full-court opportunities." North led 32-13 at the half, despite being a little careless with the ball and missing some point-blank shots. But a 22-point burst coming out of the break left the Cougars looking up out of a 54-17 hole. Point guard Kailey Bostwick turned into a major headache for Mountain View. The senior played the Cougar defense like a piano to the tune of 11 points and four assists. Post Michelle Westermann, who played Malone to Bostwick’s Stockton, dumped in a game-high 18 points and ripped down 10 rebounds — her third straight game surpassing double figures on the glass. "I think everyone has a role on this team," said Bostwick, who, along with the majority of the starting five, sat out the final quarter. "My role is to get everyone involved and, if the chance to score is there, then take it." While Bostwick was doing a good portion of her damage setting up her teammates, Westermann proved too much to handle in the halfcourt sets. She scored 10 points, mainly on offensive rebounds and pick-and-rolls, in the third period. The 6-foot senior hadn’t scored in double figures until Friday’s 18-point output during a 66-61 victory over Bend. "It’s basically how fast I was going," said Westermann, who talked to her dad and an old coach about picking up the pace of her play. "(The last two games) I’ve been playing a little faster and getting up the court (on the fastbreak) a little more. "Of course it’s a lot easier when you play with such good passers." North never trailed and was tied just once — 2-2 in the opening minutes. But it was the third quarter that showed why the Black Tornado sports a top-10 ranking. Mountain View’s Nerea Hofman scored her team’s first four points to bring the Cougars within 35-17. A Westermann jumper followed by a layup seconds later, however, keyed a 19-0 run to close the quarter. North Medford, which started the fourth quarter with all reserves on the court, scored the first three baskets of the final period to grab a 60-17 edge — the biggest lead it would hold. Bostwick and Westermann led all scorers, but they had plenty of company. Nine of the 11 Tornado players who graced the hardwood scored. Freshman post Erica Schultz added eight points and eight rebounds, while Sam Heim came off the bench for six points and six boards. Diminutive junior guard Naomi Mautz also sparked North off the pine with five assists. "We’ve got two other seniors (Caitlin Seeley and Mellisa Eastwold) who help us run the floor," adds Westermann, "and some sophomores and freshmen who have really stepped up. "I think everybody on this team contributes a lot to what we do." Hofman, who led Mountain View with eight points one night after scoring 17 against South Medford, fouled out midway through the third stanza. MOUNTAIN VIEW (28) — N.
